Colin McMenamin,
Fife Dark Blues Player of the Year 2008/09
|
Colin
McMenamin was born 12 February, 1981 in Glasgow, and is the inaugural
winner of the Fife Dark Blue's player of the year award. Having moved to Dumfries as a boy, Colin signed school boy terms with local side Queen of the South. He began his senior career in 1999 at East of Scotland Football League side, Annan Athletic, who, at the time were one of the top Scottish non-league clubs. He was signed by English Premier League club Newcastle United after one season. After two seasons without a senior appearance for Newcastle, he returned to Scotland on a free transfer to Livingston in August 2002. In three seasons with the SPL club he scored 10 goals in 50 league appearances. Colin also went on loan to Falkirk for half a season (August 2003-December 2003) during this period; he scored 4 in 16 for the Division One club. Remembering him from his time as Bobby Robson's assistant at Newcastle, the then Shrewsbury Town assistant manager Mick Wadsworth recommended him to Gary Peters (Shrewsbury manager) who snapped him up on a free transfer in August 2005. Colin was a first-choice regular with the Shropshire club, averaging one goal every four games. With 10 goals in 40 starts he was the club's top scorer in the 2005-06 League Two season. He joined Gretna in August 2006 on a free transfer, making his debut as a substitute for James Grady in the 6-0 win at home to Hamilton on August , 2006. He scored his first goals for Gretna in his second game for the club, scoring two goals in the 2-1 victory away to Clyde. In his time at Gretna, he managed to score a fantastic 23 goals in 46 appearances. He re-joined Livingston on loan in November 2007. It was announced, at the Dundee F.C. AGM on 22 January 2008, that he had signed for Dundee, with an 18 month contact. In his first season at Dens, he scored 6 goals in 11 starts, as Dundee just missed out on promotion to the SPL to Hamilton Accies. Season 2008/09 was blighted by injury for Colin, after picking up a knee injury against St. Johnstone, in September 08. He did not wear the Dark Blue of Dundee again until a substitute appearance against Clyde on December 13th, 2008. His most memorable moments of the season will probably be the goal against Celtic, in January, in the Homecoming Scottish Cup, which sent the 2000 traveling Dundee fans into raptures, and his final day of the season hat trick against Partick Thistle, in the 4-0 victory. Like most Dundee fans, we were more that happy when it was announced that Colin had signed a 2 year extension on his contract, keeping him at the club until 2011. Hopefully he can stay injury free, next season, as we make the push for the SPL, and start a 30 goal partnership with Curier. Well done, Colin, on your efforts & award from the Fife Dark Blues.
